miraDry® - Patients ask, Dr. Ringpfeil answers
Please feel free to use the blog below to share information about miraDry® or to ask Dr. Franziska Ringpfeil a question that might be of interest to others.
miraDry® uses groundbreaking, clinically proven technology to significantly reduce your underarm sweat. No pain. Unlike Botox, after just 1-2 sessions, you are sweat-free forever. With minimal to no downtime.
Dr. Ringpfeil was featured on CBS3 and talks about using the FDA-approved miraDry device to zap away underarm sweat.
If you answered "Yes" to any of the questions above, we have a solution for you
Now, we offer a lasting solution that can make embarrassing underarm sweat a thing of the past.
This is actually a common misconception, which is easily explained and backed by years of research on hyperhidrosis. Our bodies contain an astounding amount of 4,000,000 sweat glands which help expel sweat and toxins from our systems. With only 2% of sweat glands present underneath the arms, there is no harm in removing glands associated with profuse sweating.
This non-invasive procedure generally takes around one hour. Before your procedure, our clinical staff will prepare you with a thorough cleansing and administer a local anesthetic to numb the target area. We will outline the treatment area precisely with temporary marks to prepare you for miraDry®.
Next, you'll undergo advanced microwave technology, where electromagnetic energy is delivered to the underarm region to selectively destroy sweat glands. Throughout the treatment, the miraDry® system emits waves of cooling energy to prevent burning and keep you comfortable.
Because you are locally numbed in the area prior to treatment, the miraDry procedure itself should be painless. If anything, the very most you will feel would be a slightly warm sensation.
Most people who are doing the treatment for strictly cosmetic purposes will usually only need 1 treatment. For somebody with hyperhidrosis, 1-2 treatments, minimally 3 months apart is typical. Occasionally, a third treatment is needed in some cases.
The success rate is extremely high. As with any treatment, the results may vary from person to person. There is reportedly a 75-95% reduction in sweat and body odor in the underarm area.
Following the FDA-approved treatment, individuals normally experience slight swelling, soreness, and tingling sensations underneath the arms. These side effects usually subside within one week following your procedure. We're excited to say patients usually notice an immediate reduction in the amount of sweat they produce.
Thankfully, sweat glands cannot regenerate so results are long-lasting once the glands are eliminated. Since miraDry® is non-surgical, most individuals are able to return to work and their schedules immediately following a procedure.
Our dedicated staff and team of medical assistants will walk you through every step of the miraDry® process. We recommend swelling be treated with mild pain relievers and ice compresses throughout the days following miraDry®. Though you can resume light activities right after you leave our office, please refrain from heavy exercise for a few days to promote healing.
Healthy individuals who would like to experience the relief and comfort of dry underarms are exceptional candidates for this sweat-reduction treatment. Our dermatological team will consult with each patient to explain potential treatment options based on your lifestyle, body type, and age.
Please consult with our dermatologists at Ringpgfeil Dermatology if you would like to learn more about the miraDry® procedure.

I have been suffering from excessive sweating for as long as I can remember. I tried off-the counter wipes, wearing dark colors, and always having a dark cardigan in my bag in order to wear when sweat stains become too visible. I researched permanent solutions and found out about miraDry®. I then went to miraDry®'s website and looked for dermatologists who offer the procedure.
My experience with Dr Ringpfeil has been phenomenal. I am from DC and I looked for dermatologists that accept my insurance. I knew miraDry® would probably not be covered by insurance but I preferred to be insured in the unlikely case of a side complication. Dr Ringpfeil's staff, especially Emily and Martha, were extremely helpful and accommodating in explaining the procedure to me and letting me know what my options were. I decided, after my positive phone experience, to rent a car and drive from DC to Pennsylvania for a day to perform the procedure. I wasn't able to have the procedure during the normal work week since I was working in DC but Dr Ringpfeil accommodated me by having the procedure on a Saturday morning. Dr Ringpfeil also accommodated my requests for the procedure's intensity level explaining the pros and cons. After the procedure, Emily patiently explained how to reduce the discomfort and answered all my requests and questions.
It has been two months since my procedure and my sweating level has decreased significantly. I recommend miraDry® to those who suffer from excessive sweating and I most definitely recommend Dr Ringpfeil's office overall. They are helpful, knowledgeable and extremely friendly and accommodating.
I am a patient at your practice and I am interested in this procedure. I would like to know if it is covered under my insurance. Please advise. Thank you.
Unfortunately, the procedure is not covered by any insurance.
How much does this procedure cost? And say if I get the procedure done, what happens if your still sweating underneath the arms?
The miraDry treatment provides consistent results; After two treatments, three months apart, YOU WILL have an 85% reduction in sweating. The effect lasts because sweat glands do not regenerate. The fee for the miraDry ranges from under $1900 (call for current price) for a single treatment and up to $3300 for three treatments.
Update June 2016: The miraDry treatment protocol has changed and so the pricing. The new protocol allows us to achieve full results after a single treatment. In some cases a second treatment is needed. Call our office to find out what is the current price. Keep in mind that we will match any price provided to you by a physician office in a 25 miles radius around our offices.
Are there any payment plans for this?
Yes.
We offer a payment plan through Care Credit. You can spread your payment over 6 or 12 monthly payments with no interest.
Highly interested in Miradry. Do you do payment plans? I’ve been suffering from severe sweating since the age of 12. No help thus far. As I’ve heard, insurance does not cover this procedure. 🙁
We offer payment plans through CareCredit. You have the option to spread your payment over 6 or 12 months. Please contact our office and ask for Lisa who will be able to register you for that payment plan.
I’ve noticed I’ve had a difficult time controlling underarm odor. Sometimes after thoroughly showering it still seems as there’s a subtle odor left. Sometimes it doesn’t take long after to get stronger. It seems as though the deoderant isn’t working for odor–only sweat. With that said I recently realized that I have areas of my underarms that seems to be filled with deoderant. When I squeeze the substance out, a small amount of seemingly old deoderant comes out, with a sometimes extremely heavy body odor. It seems as though my pores are getting clogged by deoderant and causing a build up of old odor. What treatment would be best for this, if any? Would it merely just clog old odor in like my deoderant seems to do? Yuck.
Underarm odor had been difficult to tackle until the miraDry procedure became available. It is FDA approved for underarm sweating, however, it works for underarm odor, too. The miraDry procedure is used in Japan predominantly for underarm odor with lasting results. Since it reduces body odor and sweating at the same time you will likely not need to use any deodorant anymore.
Hello,
I’ve following the news about Miradry for a while now, but it seems that the arrival to Europe is taking longer than expected (last think I read, it would arrive in Fall 2013, but I couldn’t find anything about it yet).
Is there any news about this? I’m really looking forward to this treatment, but the US and Japan are a bit too far from home for me 🙂
Thanks and best regards.
I have severe bromhidrosis. Will Miradry work for me?
Yes, it will work on bromohidrosis. The treatment protocol is the same as with sweating and the expected results are similar also. There should be about an 85% reduction in odor after 2 treatments 3 months apart.
Do you work with the VA hospital at all? I’m a vet so I get health care through the VA but the medicine they’ve given me to put onto my hands and feet isn’t strong enough. I haven’t heard of the VA providing this treatment but I don’t have the funds to pay out of pocket. Is there anything you can recommend that won’t leave me broke?
Sweating on hands and feet is difficult to tackle. Aluminum chloride 20% helps the majority of people when it is applied twice daily to freshly washed, dry skin. Some may even notice that they can reduce to once at night use after 6-8 weeks. Additional treatment for palms ans soles is tap water iontophoresis and botulinum toxin injections (better tolerated on palms than on soles). The US approved device is made by R.A. Fisher and is available for purchase with a prescription from your dermatologist at the VA. Some dermatology centers around the country offer iontophoresis in the office but I have not yet heard of an office in this area. Botulinum toxin injections are suitable for the palms and are often an insurance benefit. I do not know the specifics of the VA benefit and encourgae you to discuss this with your dermatologist at the VA. A great resource is also http://www.sweathelp.org. Please note, Miradry is not yet possible on palms and soles.
Have you seen compensatory sweating in your experience with miraDry? I am wondering if I should try botox first to see if I have compensatory sweating before I undergo a permanent procedure.
None of our patients has developed compensatory sweating after miraDry. I have also not heard any such reports from the company nor have a seen any on my last visit to real self. You should always feel comfortable with any procedure you entertain and Botox is a good interim option before taking the permanent step.
How much does miraDry treatment cost? And how much does Laser/Lip – Nd:YAG laser cost? How many treatmemts are both?
With our new treatment protocol a single miraDry treatments would eliminate up to 82% of the underarm sweat. People who suffer from Hyperhidrosis usually need a second treatment. The cost of a single treatment is around $1800 (call to find out current price). A second treatment is normally $900. Laser-lipo or precision Tx (Nd:YAG) is usually performed in one treatment session, which reduces sweating 80-90%. The fee ranges between $4000-5000.
I am very interested in this procedure,as I have suffered with excessive sweating and odor for many years. I noticed that most of the comments are from 2013. Is the cost for miradry still $3000 for both treatments or has the cost changed? Please advise.
MiraDry is still the most effective permanent solution to sweat reduction with excessive sweating. It is now also popular to reduce sweating even in those who do not suffer form excessive sweat. Wit our new treatment protocol, those who simply wish to stop underarm sweat or odor might only require one treatment. Those with excessive sweating will require two or perhaps even three treatments. The cost of a single treatment is around $1800 (call to find out current price). A second treatment is normally $900.
